I didn't realize I left it out! Whoops! The reason I only added 1 Damping Sphere in the upgrade guide is because I think 2 RIP + Sphere is fine, but yeah, I totally forgot to grab it when I sideboarded. 😂

I appreciate you being real when it came to pushing the budget. It’s would very convenient to just stick within the upgrade plan and make a subpar deck within budget. Some decks and play styles are harder to budget and it’s admirable if you to highlight that.

Finale is also used as a secondary wincon if you lose your oracle, you can use sylvan safekeeper to sac all your lands, evoke endurance to shuffle them all + itself back then put all your lands back into play untapped to make a crazy amount of mana and finale for lethal. Safekeeper + endurance trick is also useful if you find yourself unable to pay UU for thoracle, sac and shuffle back the lands you need and put them back into play untapped.

For me, it was less about understanding deck construction, and moreso that Lantern Control has always blown my mind. It’s pure assessment of threats and knowledge of the game as a whole, the way you have to force the game and match to keep moving or you’ll draw, and the fact that it truly seems thrown together with some VERY unlikely card synergies. I adore it, and I’m not sure I’ll ever play it.

I've been playing for quite some time now but I've only been playing kitchen table Magic (i dabble in a bit of pauper but that's it in terms of actual 'formats'). I watch a lot of content in order to keep my finger on the pulse of the game and I think that at least theoretically I'm actually quite up to date at any given moment. However, I keep having a similar experience to what you just described and I actually love it and try to preserve the feeling. It's quite hard to experience awe and wonder in a game when you're in your 30s and have played for a long time. But given that building decks with what I have available at the time, coming up with original decks (even though they may be trash) and figuring out how cards can actually work together (either by myself or through a friend as in your case with Carl), I keep getting surprised and some discoveries genuinely feel so rewarding and so fascinating still. So yeah, kitchen table Magic to me is not-so-secretly the most inspiring way of engaging with the game.

when i was in middle school, I was playing booster pack fodder kitchen table jank until I played against Elf Ball. That was my eye-opener. From there, I decided I had to be faster than it. So I built a burn deck with shocks, bolts, and volcanic hammers/incinerates. But I'd still lose until I started shocking the enemy mana dorks. After that, I built reanimator.

So I learned to play mtg on the Xbox games. Deck building there was really restricted, but it gave me that same experience you had (albeit I stepped away from Xbox mtg for many years before being introduced to paper commander). My first paper deck, (mind you this was just after the release of Rivals of Ixalan) was a Gishath EDH deck. I knew the basics of how to play, but I hadn't seen combo. I hadn't seen self milling. All the Xbox decks were basically battlecruiser. The group I learned commander with were strong decks from the get-go. Ghave, Scion of the Ur Dragon, Grand-Arbiter Augustine, Oona, and the odd precon. So my battlecruiser Gishath dino tribal deck was swinging way above its weight class. I won the odd game when Gishath snowballed, but I spent a lot of time learning the value of ramp, removal, the limited counter spells that were available in Naya, THE STACK, and so on. I built, bought, and upgraded a few more decks, then I saw Lazav. Lazav was everything I wanted. He was in good tutor colors, he was toolboxy and could respond to everything thrown at him, and could combo on a whim. Lazav was my first powerhouse of a deck. The first deck that didn't just get lucky on a snowball. The first deck that could consistently hold it's own against those "Tier 1/Tier 0 commanders". And I haven't touched the deck list sense. When I play that deck it brings me nostalgia, brings me pride in having come so far from the little "Timmy" I was. And then I built turbo food chain prossh. It was too good. Consistently won turns 1-3, had too many answers to removal and whatnot. And now lives on in like 20 other decks since it's the only deck I ever dismantled.

Where are the well-deserved dislikes? Doing nothing but comparing the two passes only informs us of what to do if we have to choose between one or the other; it can still be worthwhile to get both even if they don't have equal value. Nothing in this video supports the claim that the hideaway should not be purchased.

I had a reverse of this experience two weeks ago. In preparation for the Gaydh pride commander event where any two commanders can be paired, we ran a test weekend at my LGS. I brought K'rrik and Nightmare Braids as my partners and one of my pod mates looked over at my board on turn two and went "oh! I didn't realize you had both your commanders out turn two @#$&"

My friend's Mind's Desire deck had me beat every time. He just stormed off and cast all his good stuff for free. Thanks for the cool video, I got a huge hit of nostalgia because you were describing my noob years almost exactly. I still have a playset of 7th edition Thorn Elementals and Molimo/Multani because Big Green Stompy was the most logical strategy for 13 year old me. That friend got me interested in combos and synergy for the first time.
